How Long Does It Take To Charge A Tesla?

Battery capacity, charging method, and available power output affect how long it takes to charge your Tesla.

The easiest and most commonly used charging scenario is right at home. However, some living in apartments may need to look into different solutions.

We’ve compiled a guide to help you understand your options for getting your Tesla charged. From home to Superchargers, we’ve got you covered.

Home Charging

How Long Does It Take To Charge A Tesla, A few factors determine how long it takes to charge your Tesla. These include the battery size, charging speed, and weather conditions.

For a standard-range Tesla, charging times can range from 3 to 6 to 9 hours, while longer-range models require more time for charging.

It also depends on your electricity provider’s rates and what type of charger you use. Level 1 home chargers are slow and charge EVs at speeds of around 3.6 to 7 kW.

If you’re looking for faster charging, you can install a Level 2 charger, adding 25 or 35 miles per hour. These can be hardwired into your home’s electrical panel or plugged into a 240-volt socket, said Ken Sapp, senior vice president at Qmerit, a company that installs them.

However, Level 2 chargers aren’t cheap, so it’s important to research and choose one that will work best for your budget. In addition, Sapp recommends consulting a certified electrician to get a clear idea of the costs and the work involved.

Public Charging

Public charging is a great way to fill up your Tesla; how Long Does It Take To Charge A Tesla? whether driving across the country or on a long road trip? It’s convenient and can save you much money on fuel, especially in high-cost areas.

One of the best ways to find public charging stations is with an app like Plugshare. You can search by city, state, and more and see charging station availability, prices, and ratings.

Another option is a J1772 adapter, which lets you charge your Tesla at any EV charger. If you’re staying at a hotel, you can also check to see if any Level 2 chargers are available. How Long Does It Take To Charge A Tesla?

The Obama administration is preparing to impose standards on all new chargers, which will help unlock the first wave of federal funding for electric vehicle infrastructure. It will require chargers to meet a combined charging system (CCS) standard designed to make it easier to refill EV batteries and keep costs down.

Supercharger Stations

How long it takes to charge a Tesla at a supercharger depends on several factors. How depleted your battery is, how many other cars are charging simultaneously, and even if other Superchargers share power supplies between stalls will affect how quickly you get charged.

EV drivers can find Supercharger stations at airports, hotels, and other locations where they’ll likely leave their vehicles parked for a while. They can use these destinations to recharge their Teslas in between trips.

It generally takes 40 minutes to charge a Tesla from 0% to 80% using a Supercharger station. Once you reach 80%, the charging rate slows to preserve battery health.

Limiting the amount of time you charge your EV to a few hours each day, particularly when the weather is warm, is best. It’s also important to avoid rapid charging regularly – it can damage your car’s batteries.

Charger Adapters

If you’re traveling and need to charge your Tesla while you’re away from home, a few different charger adapters can help. They allow you to connect your car to a standard 120V or 240V outlet.

One option is to use a CCS charging adapter compatible with over 5,000 CCS chargers worldwide. This is an easy and cost-effective way to charge your Tesla.

Another option is the J1772 adapter, which allows you to charge your Tesla at various public Level 2 charging stations. These are available at hotels, department stores, parking lots, and more.

As with all charging methods, keeping your battery charged at all times is important. Maintaining a 20% or higher battery will ensure you get the most out of your car.
