Neuralink is developing brain processor implants that, according to the company, could restore movement in paralyzed patients and even vision in blind people.
After missing earlier deadlines set by the billionaire CEO, Elon Musk expects human clinical trials of a wireless, quarter-sized brain device developed by his company Neuralink to begin within six months.
Neuralin Developed a Brain Chip
Neuralink is developing brain-computer interfaces that, according to the company, could allow disabled patients to once again move and communicate, and Musk claims the company will also focus on restoring vision.
Neuralink, with offices in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, Texas, has conducted animal tests recently as it seeks approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to initiate clinical trials.

Musk stated during a much-anticipated public update on the device on Wednesday, “We want to be extremely cautious and certain that it will work well before implanting it in a human.”
“The initial progress, particularly as it pertains to humans, may appear agonizingly slow, but we are doing everything in parallel to bring it to scale,” he added. Therefore, development should be exponential.

Musk stated that the first two human applications targeted by the Neuralink device would be to restore vision and enable mobility of muscles in enabled individuals.
“Even if a person has never had a vision as if they were born blind, we still believe we can restore their vision,” he said.
Grand Ambitions Running Behind Schedule
The event was originally scheduled for October 31, but Musk postponed it without explanation just days beforehand.
More than a year ago, during Neuralink’s last public demonstration, a chimpanzee with a brain chip played the computer game, Pong.
Musk, who also operates the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, the rocket company SpaceX, and the social media platform Twitter, is renowned for his lofty ambitions, which include colonizing Mars and saving humanity.
His Goals for Neuralink, Which He Launched in 2016, are Similarly Ambitious.
He hopes to create a chip enabling the brain to control complex electronic devices, allowing paralyzed individuals to regain motor function and treating brain diseases like Parkinson’s, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. He also discusses the integration of the brain with artificial intelligence.

However, Neuralink is Running Behind Schedule.
In a 2019 presentation, Musk said he hoped to receive regulatory approval by the end of 2020. In late 2021, he stated at a conference that he hoped to begin human trials this year.
According to current and former employees, Neuralink has repeatedly missed internal deadlines to obtain FDA approval to initiate human trials.
Synchron, a competitor, has already begun human trials of a brain interface designed to enable paralyzed individuals to control digital devices with their thoughts wirelessly.
The neural implant being evaluated does not require open brain surgery; rather, it is threaded through a minor incision in the neck, up the jugular vein, and into the brain.
Synchron reached a significant milestone in July when it implanted its device in a patient for the first time in the United States. The company has also completed studies on four individuals in Australia.
Reuters reported in August that Musk approached Synchron about a prospective investment earlier this year after expressing frustration to Neuralink employees about their slow progress.
